Education, ICT and Development in Rural Mountainous Vietnam: Lessons Learned From the Field

Abstract

In today’s digital environment, it is broadly agreed that having access to information and communication technologies (ICT) has had a beneficial impact in economic advancement and societal growth. In the last decade a consensus has emerged that ICTs also have the potential to help developing countries be competitive in the global economy. The significance of ICTs in development (ICTD) is suggested in a recent World Bank observation: “Mobile communication has arguably had a bigger impact on humankind in a shorter period of time than any other invention in human history (World Bank, 2012a).

Thúy Tranviet

Thúy Tranviet is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies at
Cornell University, where she is also a doctoral candidate in the Graduate Field of Education. Her study on International Service Learning (ISL) in developing countries examining impacts and benefits of ISL for both the students and the communities in the host country. Her broad research interests include comparative and international education, education and globalization, international service learning, international development, and communication for development.
