This issue of the Journal of Development Communication (Vol. 35, No. 1, 2024) explores a range of themes, underscoring the critical role of communication in addressing both global and local challenges. One study examines the influence of ambivalence on COVID-19 vaccination decisions, highlighting the need for nuanced and effective risk communication strategies. Another investigates the dual capacity of new media to both empower and undermine democratic institutions in India, emphasising the necessity for balanced regulatory measures. Research from Nigeria focuses on the gendered adoption of digital platforms by micro-enterprises, identifying barriers that limit women’s entrepreneurial opportunities. An analysis of media coverage in Ghana exposes persistent biases against female parliamentary candidates, advocating for more equitable and balanced reporting. In Kenya, a study reveals cultural discrepancies in HIV/AIDS interventions for vulnerable groups, calling for communication approaches that are more culturally attuned. Finally, an evaluation of community radio in the Philippines highlights its potential to catalyse local development. Collectively, these studies stress the need for inclusive and context-specific communication strategies to advance equitable progress across health, governance, and development sectors.
