Abstract

The world changed dramatically in 1991 when the sprawling Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) imploded as an empire after seven decades, not long after liberating its satellite states in Eastern and Central Europe.  A political, economic, and multicultural system of ideology and authoritarianism born in revolution literally fell apart under the pressure of  growing  public  dissatisfaction,  rival  political  ambitions,  economic

stagnation, and grassroots citizen activism.
